Centre for the Interpretation of Rivers \ José Juan Barba

A building completed in 2009 but possibly not familiar to a British public is José Juan Barba's Centre for the Interpretation of Rivers in Benavente, Spain. A project with a rich level of metaphor, the design has a clarity in its use of materials, some internally that are slight in relation to the change of concrete from wall to roof, and externally with exposed concrete beautifully juxtataposed by copper cladding. The simple moves in the play of light are well controlled and by all accounts make for wonderful internal spaces.

This conceptual sketch conveys the importance and clarity that a loose free hand drawing can give you - as well as the glimpse into the nucleus of an original idea.

Presidents House, University of Limerick \ Grafton Architects

It is always a good rule of thumb to keep up to date with the works of architects like Grafton, who have recently completed this modest but well detailed house for the University of Limerick.

Studio Sitges, Spain \ Olson Kundig Architects

Designed as the residence and workspace for two artists, this project by Olsen Kundig exhibits the beauty in contrast that rustic metals give when placed with plainer materials, in this case concrete. Whilst the street frontage gives across the impression of privacy, the back side of the building open ups to the private landscape with living spaces.

Louis Kahn - Fisher House

A+U's 2009 special edition of the works of Louis Kahn have a wonderful review of the Fisher House, one of the finest private houses I have ever seen. The choice of materials, connection from interior to exterior and some finely composed windows make a building which should be on every architects screen saver.

The edition also has an interview with Doris Fisher and an insight into the design development.

Center for the Promotion of Science / Dürig AG

Dürig AG competition entry for the Centre for the promotion of Science, as part of New Belgrade. While not the winning entry, this design shows a boldness in design, common for those familiar with the practices other work.
